All offseason it appeared there was a competition between veteran linemen Oday Aboushi and Kenny Wiggins for the same one roster spot. Both have experience and some level of success as the top reserve guard, and both can also play tackle in a pinch.
The debate between which veteran would stick and possibly be the third man in the guard rotation wound up being moot. Patricia cut them both and kept unheralded Matt Nelson instead.
Nelson appears to be the most likely player on the current 53-man roster to get bumped by a waiver claim, but for now he’s the No. 8 lineman. That’s an upset nobody predicted.
Could it mean an end to the controversial guard rotation? It’s difficult to envision Nelson stealing regular-season reps from Joe Dahl or Jonah Jackson, the starting guards. Rookie Logan Stenberg is the backup center and unlikely to play guard as a result. This could change if another veteran is brought in, but Wiggins had the trust of the coaching staff and they still let him go in favor of Nelson.
That’s very interesting, said in the manner of Capt. Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean voice…
