Romano: Tottenham Hotspur’s €30m deal for Sergio Reguilon is done – Cartilage Free Captain

I didn’t wake up this morning to a tweet from Tottenham Hotspur’s twitter account of a player holding a shirt, but we did get the next best thing. According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal between Spurs and Real Madrid for the permanent transfer of left back Sergio Reguilon is done, pending his arrival in London, a physical, and his signature.

Romano also confirmed the following: Reguilon’s transfer fee is €30m (£27.5m), his contract is for five years (no salary details yet), and there are two pro-Madrid clauses inserted into his contract that made the difference in Madrid agreeing to Spurs’ deal instead of the one issued by Manchester United. The first is a clause issuing Madrid the right of first refusal, so that if Spurs eventually accept a bid for Reguilon from another club Madrid has the right to match it. The second is a buy-back clause of between €40-45m.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has usually been loath to include buyback clauses in deals for incoming players, but was amenable to it this time for reasons we can only guess at. I would assume that the guarantee of making a profit should he turn out to be fantastic is one reason, but also that Madrid calling him home is unlikely considering that Reguilon and Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane don’t get along.

As for when Reguilon will arrive in London, well — he might be here already. Spurs’ Plane Tracker Twitter™ was again in full force last night, not only possibly identifying his private jet in Madrid before it even took off, but also filming what could be his plane on the tarmac at London Stansted Airport.

Say what you want about transfer rumors, but the emergence of Plane Tracker Twitter™ is legit my favorite thing about the modern day window.

I’m not going to say that you can start moving now. Clearly that would be unwise. But if you wanted to start putting celebratory .gifs in the comments that probably wouldn’t curse the club back to the stone age. It looks as though it’s only a matter of time until a hype video hits the internet courtesy of @SpursOfficial.
