Luis Suarez handed fresh Barcelona hope by Ronald Koeman amid Juventus transfer issues – Mirror Online

Luis Suarez has been offered fresh hope he could still have a Barcelona future after passport issues held up his switch to Juventus.

Former Liverpool striker Suarez had been told he was surplus to requirements by new Barca boss Ronald Koeman.

The 33-year-old agreed personal terms with Juventus on a three-year-deal worth £9million, and it looked as though the La Liga giants would be getting him off their wage bill.

But Suarez’s move has been put in jeopardy by the prolonged process of securing an Italian passport – and the Turin could now look at other targets such as Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud and Edin Dzeko of Roma.

That threatened to leave the Uruguay international in limbo at the Nou Camp – and he was not included in the Barca squad which beat Girona 3-1 in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday.

But Koeman’s latest comments have given Suarez cause for optimism, with the Blaugranas boss saying the striker will not be frozen out if stays at the Catalan club.

“Suarez will be one more [member of the squad] if he stays,” the Barcelona coach told TV3 .

“I was talking to Luis this morning. We will wait to see if there is a way out or not. We respect contracts and, from day one, we have said that if he stays on the squad, it will be one more.”

Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring against Girona, with Lionel Messi firing a double – after both players were linked with moves away this summer.

Messi eventually decided to stay having told Barca chiefs he wanted to leave, amid strong speculation he was headed for Manchester City.

Coutinho was tipped for a Premier League return after spending last season on loan at Bayern Munich, having struggled to recapture his best form since joining Barcelona in 2018.

And Koeman appeared to suggest the Brazilian still has a future at the Nou Camp, saying: “He is in high spirits at the moment, training and playing well.

“He has great quality. We must bear in mind that he needs the support of the coach and the fans.”

The head coach also praise the performances of young players Konrad de la Fuente, Pedri and Riqui Puig, all of whom came on as substitutes against Girona.

“The important thing is to participate in training sessions and friendlies,” Koeman said in quotes reported by Goal.

“If I had to highlight one young player I would say Konrad, but Pedri and Riqui also have a great future ahead of them.”
